Unlearning unconscious habits is a gentle and natural way to relieve stress and pain.

With the guidance of a skilled teacher, the Alexander Technique can help you find a new way of moving through the world. All of us carry accumulated tension in our bodies. Carrying this stress can lead to pain, injury, low energy, and low spirits.

What will the Alexander Technique do for you?

During your first appointment with Anita, she will gently and non-judgmentally help draw your attention to your own personal habits of posture or movement that might lead to the accumulation of tension. In each session, you will acquire tools to allow you to let go of limiting patterns and discover easier choices that lead to ease of movement and thought.

What are the benefits?

As you learn more about AT, you will experience a wide variety of benefits, both physical and psychological, which may include the following:

  • Enhanced self-awareness
  • Restoration of innate coordination
  • Discovery of the artistry of body and life
  • Relief of pain
  • Reduction of tension
  • Joy attained through increased ease and flexibility

Who will benefit?

You! Virtually anyone can benefit from the Alexander Technique.

Do you have a hobby? Play a sport or instrument? Have a demanding job? Are you a parent? Have you experienced an injury? Is your life stressful or busy sometimes? Most of us strain ourselves in one way or another. Those who carry the most stress and tension will see the biggest benefits in terms of pain reduction, but anyone who wants to feel comfortable and at ease in their own skin will love AT.

What does a lesson look like?

During an appointment, Anita will speak with you about your goals and how you are currently feeling. She will conduct your session through verbal feedback and hands-on guidance. Depending on your needs, your work may be stationary or mobile.
Many students feel relaxed and uplifted after a session. Gradually, through awareness and practice, you will learn to move beyond old habits and into a new way of being in the world.

There’s science behind the technique.

Awareness of the benefits of AT is growing on an international scale. Numerous publications have recognized its usefulness. Here’s a selection of our favorite articles about AT:

After many years of hearing it referenced, I finally took an Alexander Technique workshop a couple weekends ago. If you have chronic pain or discomfort (or wish to prevent such from developing) from work routines, hobby, craft, whatever, I hiiiighly recommend seeing if you have a local practitioner. I have benefited from many modalities of bodywork and physical therapy, but the Alexander Technique really nails it with posture/body composure and how we use our body in everyday life. It is also way more than that, kind of beautifully mind-blowing. Iowa City friends, we are bizarrely lucky to have a top-level practitioner here, the only one in Iowa certified in Contemporary Alexander Technique. Her name is Anita Mischuk (www.atmw.us)... I am shamelessly promoting her and the Alexander Technique in general.
